Lake Lenape Information
Location: Mays Landing, NJ. Atlantic County
Size: 350 acres.
Depth: Mean depth = 6 feet. Areas near the center of the lake (creek channel) reach depths of up to 12 feet.
Ramp and Parking: New ramp and parking lot opened in late 2001. Ramp configuration only allows one vehicle in the ramp area at a time. Due to occasional wash-outs (from people powering their boats onto trailers), there is sometimes a drop-off at the end of the concrete ramp. When the park is aware of this condition, they alert boaters. There is annual ramp registration fee of $5.00 (see Rules & Regulations). Adequate amount of parking space.
Motor Limits: Depending on launch ramp permit type, outboard motors up to 9.9 hp or unlimited hp outboards (see Rules & Regulations).
Rules & Regulations: The park doesn't open until 7:30 am, but you can call ahead to try to arrange to have the gates opened a bit earlier. Boaters must check in at the ramp office before launching. Launch ramp permit stickers: An
annual launch ramp permit sticker must be purchased for $5.00. You purchase the sticker at the park office near the ramp. To obtain it you must show your 1) boat registration, 2) trailer registration, 3) boat operator's license and 4) boating safety course certificate (all of which they photo and keep on file). The permit sticker is good for the calendar year, but when any of your documents are renewed during the year, you need to let the park photocopy the new documents. For boats with motors less than 10 hp, this is the entire process. For boats with motors over 9.9 hp, you must also present proof of liability insurance of at least $500,000. (It was reported by one club member that the park now insists that they be listed on your insurance policy so that they will be notified if/when it expires, but this has not been verified.) In
addition, the number of outboards over 9.9 hp allowed on the lake at one time is limited to eight. You must visit the park office in person to reserve one of the eight slots. You can only reserve one slot per visit (can't reserve slots for two different dates on the same visit)
Comments: A good sizeable lake, but the rules, registration and late opening-time limitations at the county park make
it less than ideal for tournaments. On Saturdays in March and April, the lake frequently hosts rowing regattas and the lake is closed to boating on those dates. Also, on one or two weekends in early September, the lake hosts hydroplane races and the lake is closed to boating. To find out if there are any events planned, you can call Lenape Park at 609-625-8219. During times of minimal rainfall and during the winter (intentional lowering) and when there are problems with the dam, the water level in the lake gets very low and the ramp is sometimes closed to boaters.
Need for Morning Quiet?: No (except for lake rule of no outboard motors running prior to 7:30 am)
